St Mary's Church History
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is of late Norman construction on the site of a Saxon church mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is a Grade I listed building.
Until the dissolution of the monasteries, an alien cell of a Benedictine Priory was attached to the church. All traces above ground of the monastery have long since disappeared, although the foundations still exist to the north of the church and restrictions on this part of the churchyard are covered by English Heritage regulations. Over the years many alterations have been made to the church buildings, particularly during the major church renovations of the late 1840s and again over recent decades. More modern additions include a small kitchen area and toilet, a new sound system and hearing loop. |
St Mary’s seats approximately 200 people in pews, with further seating in various parts of the building.
Our tower bells are rung regularly and we have an organ scholarship with some promising youngsters from within the village taking part. Apart from acts of worship, the building is regularly used for concerts and has been used for television productions and musical recordings; the acoustics are remarkable. St Mary’s churchyard extends to about 5 acres and is maintained by volunteers. St Mary's is open daily between 9 am and (approximately) 5.30 pm |
